ANIMAL SHELTER CLOSED NEXT WEEK

(8/11/2006) NEW HAVEN – The New Haven Animal Shelter will be closed from Monday, 14 August, through Saturday, 19 August 2006. Residents with animal complaints may call the New Haven Police Department at 946-6316. At the request of an investigating officer, a shelter staff member will respond to emergencies.

Although the shelter will be closed, some special activities will be held:

• There will be a rabies clinic at the Fair Haven Police Substation, 295 Blatchley Avenue, on Thursday, 17 August, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. All animals must be three months or older to receive the vaccine. Cats must be in carriers and dogs must be on leashes. The fee is $10, cash only. This event is open to all Connecticut residents. Additional licensure of resident (New Haven) dogs six months and older will apply. The fee is $8 for an altered animal and $19 for an unaltered animal.

• Petco, 2100 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden, will host an adoption event on Saturday, 19 August, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event is sponsored by the North Shore Animal League. The fee to adopt an animal is $80, cash only, and potential pet owners must provide proof of home ownership or their landlord’s phone number. Dog owners who are looking for a canine friend for their dog must bring him/her along to ensure that the animals are compatible. All animals are vaccinated and sent home with a voucher to defray the cost of altering the animal and two more vaccinations ($70 toward feline spay, $50 toward feline neuter, $120 toward canine spay and $100 toward canine neuter) if not already altered.

The shelter will resume normal operations on Monday, 21 August, and will reopen to the public on Tuesday, 22 August.
